The Samsung QLED 8K TV can never be obsolete

By: Maclean Kwofi

Users of electronic devices such as mobile phones, computers and television sets have always looked forward to the day when manufacturers will boast of a device with the ability to upgrade itself to meet the changing trends of technology without purchasing a completely new device to replace the outdated one.

Especially with mobile phones and television sets, users often have less option than to replace their outdated devices whether cash trapped or not, it is a must with the current level of technological evolution.

But over a period that hurdles have long been addressed with the introduction of the QLED TV series by Samsung Electronics.

AI Upscaling feature

What sets the QLED 8K apart from competition, is its ‘8K Artificial Intelligence (AI) Upscaling’ feature, which harnesses machine learning to transform lower quality image contents into vivid 8K resolution.

Not only can you watch content developed in the television sets, three-million-pixel screen, but with the AI Upscaling feature, users can also watch their favourite videos from any resolution – from standard definition (SD) to 4K – transformed to as close to 8K quality as is possible, depending on the source.

8K AI Upscaling is a technology that allows viewers to enjoy their favourite videos originally presented in SD, FHD and UHD in 8K super high-quality resolution.

On other higher definition screens, playing a low-definition video results in pixelation, image blurring and an overall unsatisfying viewing experience.

This means that the television has been clothed with the capacity to upscale from a lower resolution to 8K level in order to present a better viewing experience.

So even though currently movies are not produced in 8K resolutions, viewers can still be able to enjoy 8K content with the Samsung QLED 8K TV.

Advance resolution process

Reflecting the way human object perception registers objects that are closer to humans in more detail, the feature carefully adjusts content to give ultimate image depth thanks to the advanced resolution process engine.

When playing a low-definition video on a high-definition screen, transmission disturbance that blurs details and caused unwanted digital static are the most disruptive impediments to a satisfying viewing experience.

As the input images have lower quality, letter outlines on captions and subtitles become more blurred. However, 8K AI Upscaling intelligently streamlines thick and rough outlines so that they are as sharp as possible, delivering clearer letters on the screen worthy of a high definition television experience.

This aspect of the upscaling is crucial to viewers, as the improved legibility of text, demonstrated in the above images, decreases eye strain.

Contrast expansion

With 8K AI Upscaling, denser contrast expression means that object details inside of a black background become more pronounced compared to in their original source resolution, heightening a realistic viewing experience.

In order to counteract any light spreading across dark-hued content, a common problem in lower-resolution videos, the Upscaling’s intelligent algorithms analyse black video patterns in order to transmit the perfect black; the quality of this deep black is on a par with content originally produced in 8K resolution.

8K AI Upscaling intelligently analyses not only 4K but also SD, HD, FHD and any other video resolutions in real-time and any necessary features are supplemented.

Textures are restored with delicate detail offsetting, any visual static is automatically eliminated by video stream compression, low-definition edges are sharpened to avoid blurriness, and any discontinuous lines are restored.

The key element to this is machine learning. Thanks to the QLED 8K’s inbuilt ‘Quantum Processor 8K’ technology, the intelligent algorithm learns from the differences found and makes note of the correlation between low-definition and high-definition content.

Artificial intelligence

8K AI Upscaling is based on artificial intelligence smart learning, so through usage, it will develop and adapt with each video upscale as more video data becomes available to the system to be analysed.

But even from the first usage, the QLED 8K provides the most comfortable colour, light and texture balances to provide the optimum viewing experience for each user.

8K AI Upscaling opened the development possibilities of not just improving resolution and achieving better image quality, but also in the area of human taste, which is difficult to emulate.

Strong sale

Thanks to this strong model, Samsung has been reported as the largest TV vendor in 2019, marking the 14th consecutive year for the company to lead the segment.

That is nearly one and a half decades of market dominance, and last year the company maintained its top spot largely thanks to strong QLED TV sales.

Media reports even has it that, the television manufacturer had the most global TV shipments out of all the vendors, covering 19.8 per cent of the market throughout 2019.

Its QLED TVs are increasing in popularity and 12.1 per cent of all the QLED televisions sold throughout 2019 were manufactured by Samsung.

Based on this, the TV maker plans to sell more QLED TVs to increase its market share and widen the gap between other competitors.

According to media reports, Samsung plans to sell eight million QLED TVs in 2020. This will be an increase of more than 50 per cent compared to 5.3 million last year.

It was for this reason why most critics have argued that the QLED 8K television can never be obsolete in the market.
